“How do you spell…?” How many times a day do you hear that phrase? I don’t spell words for my kids but I teach them the strategies to help themselves! This product includes seven strategies and they are as follows:
-stretching sounds and writing them down
-word wall use
-listening to hear a small word inside the word
-breaking the word into syllables or word parts
-using the book that you are reading to help you spell (If writing to respond to a book you have read, you can grab words right from the text)
-writing the word a couple different ways and selecting the one that looks right
-Say it, hear it, write it, slide it (sliding your finger under the word to make sure you have all the sounds needed)
These are primarily the strategies we, as adults use, with the exception of sliding our finger under a word we’ve spelled!
Once you have taught the strategies and hung the mini posters, you’ll be off! But there’s more! Included in this product is also two bookmarks (color/bw) with the strategies for quick reference. It would be ideal to print, fold and laminate and provide each child in your class with a bookmark! This way during writing class or when responding to writing, it will always be available. It would also be great to give to parents to keep at home to help support the work you are doing!
This is helpful to all kids but especially to ELLs and resource kids because of the visuals and that all kids come to us at different levels and different needs!
