Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe is a great way to give students choices for how they practice their spelling words each week.
Students always complete the center square of "3 Times Each". Then students can select ANY two additional squares to use with their spelling words.
In my third grade classroom I assign this practice based on their spelling test performance. If students earn 3 A's in a row on the weekly tests, then they ONLY have to do "3 Times Each" as long as they continue to pass the weekly spelling test with an A. This works as a great motivation tool for students who would otherwise not put in the time to study and do their best. It also eliminates homework in spelling for those who do not need additional practice.
I keep an example folder in the classroom for the students to review the expectation for each Tic-Tac-Toe option. By the end of first quarter the class has mastered what is expected and completes the weekly assignment without prompting.
