Spelling instruction should not be a random list of words sent home at the beginning of the week to be memorized and then forgotten after the test. Spelling should be taught in conjunction with the phonics skills that are being taught in the classroom. This resource is set up as a sequence of spelling rules and decoding skills that build upon each other. You will watch your students become more confident readers, spellers and writers every week. Spelling has traditionally been an area where families participate in their child's education and they may be uncomfortable with this new approach. Reassure them that they still can participate even though there will not be a weekly list of spelling words to memorize. In each of these units, I have created activities that can be used as homework, literacy centers, or both. Using these activities for both helps close the gap for children who do not get homework support at home.

This is my first week of first-grade spelling instruction.

This unit contains C, O, A, D, G!

This resource contains the following posters, printables, and activities.

*Suggested Word List has both nonsense and real words for you to use during instruction. After teaching the first five letters from the phonics posters, I have students practice on white boards, progressing from dictating first letter/sound to words and then to sentences.

*Spelling/Phonics Rule Poster gives visual support for the rule you are teaching. This resource has two focus posters: “Every Word Has a Vowel” and “CVC: Closed Pattern.” I immediately begin introducing types of syllables. (There are seven different types of syllables.) Closed syllables can follow the CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) or the VC (vowel-consonant) pattern. However, I only introduce the CVC pattern in this week.

*Class Posters give visual reinforcement for the letter/sound combinations. I hang them where they can be a reference point as I teach them.

*Assessment Paper has two sheets per page to save ink and paper.

Homework & Literacy Resources

*Parent Letter helps explain this new philosophy and gain parental support.

*Activities/Printables can be sent home in a packet for weekly homework or used in the classroom for literacy centers.
