This is a 36-week phonics-based spelling program designed for beginning and struggling readers; as well as special needs learners. The program introduces only 5 new words each week, which is appropriate for struggling learners. Spelling lists follow a sequential phonics sequence that covers short vowels, consonant digraphs, long vowels, beginning blends, ending blends, and ends with two weeks of review. Homework is provided for each weekly list for Monday through Thursday and remains consistent from week to week allowing students to complete homework independently. Supplemental phonics sheets are also included for each list for students that need additional practice. The phonics sheets were designed to be hands-on and used in an interactive notebook (IN), but can easily be used without an IN as well. If you choose to use them in interactive phonics notebooks, the sky is the limit!! Students will have a record of their weekly spelling words to easily flip back and review as needed. In addition, students can use the blank pages following each pasted lesson to complete additional practice activities you may choose such as using the words in a sentence, practice tests, or rewriting the words they missed on their spelling tests.
This resource provides lots of opportunity for repetition and practice for struggling students and is easy to implement. I implemented this unit in my classroom this past school year, so it has been teacher-tested and was very effective for special needs learners.
