This Hawaiian fish song leads to a discussion of word differences and cultural diversity within our country.Designed to be used as a spelling or syllabication activity in correlation with Rick Charette’s song: "Humuhumunukunukuapua’a."
Give each child a sentence strip with the name of the fish. Have them draw a line after every u in the fish word. Help them count the u's.Explain that these are called syllables and have the sound of a short u.
Have them circle the h's and underline the k's. Now it is time to read and spell.
