Product Description
This presentation contains a 36 slide PowerPoint lesson in an editable PPT format with a work papers and Teacher’s notes that accompany the lesson.
“The checkbook and the calendar don't lie”
The most basic principles in all personal finance is:
someone can take a look at your bank/credit card statement and identify your current priorities (and it’s not a pretty picture…).
This is a fascinating phenomenon, which is consistent throughout all well-off societies: “The more money we have, the more contradiction there is between our spending and our declared values”.
This lesson works great, because almost all the students discover this gap once we place their values and spending bills side by side.
This lesson includes:
- A false beginning – the title slide is purposely misleading, it introduces “values” as the topic of the lesson
- A conversation about abstract values and how we implement them in our everyday life
- Now comes the real topic – spending money
- We discuss the items on our (hypothetical) bank statements, (the biggest expense, an exaugurated expense, an unnecessary expense) and try to understand the reasons for them.
- We describe what our “priority financial wish list” would look like and compare it to what our credit card bill really looks like.
- We discuss the reason for this “ridiculous gap” between what we believe in and what we spend money on
- Each student gets a work paper to mark their individual monthly expenses
- We present possible solutions to the problem
