I love the fall season! After our students return from Fall Break, I start teaching informational reading and informative writing. What better topic in October than spiders! (And bats! Check out my store for my complex text unit on bats!) This unit can take 1-2 weeks, depending on your classroom schedule.
My complex text units cover many of our second grade CCSS standards. This unit includes:
Close Reading with Annotation – Visit my TpT store to pick up my annotation symbols!
Vocabulary Development (RI.2.4)
Completing a Diagram (RI.2.7)
Text Dependent Questions covering Main Idea (RI.2.2) and Text Features (RI.2.5)
Informative/Explanatory Writing (W.2.2, 2.5, 2.8)
Use the book Spiders from Reading A-Z.
I encourage you to take your time working through this unit as a class or in small groups. Allow the students plenty of time to discuss ideas and work through the complexity of the text together! Step away and enjoy listening to the academic discourse that blossoms in your classroom!
This unit could easily be used in a small group/guided reading setting as well. First grade and third grade teachers, you can use this unit with your high-achieving firsties or struggling third graders.
