This unique nonfiction unit focuses on facts about spiders. It is based on the National Geographic Kids book entitled “Spiders”, Level 1. In this amazing unit, students will focus on target skills, while learning about the differences between spiders and insects. There are comprehension activities for each chapter of the book, plus a close read, comprehension, fluency and short answer activity for the fact sheet. Students will put their new knowledge about spiders to use as they write an informational piece about spiders, complete a poem, write a letter, enjoy a word search and learn a rap. The books can be found at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or occasionally in the Scholastic Book Club magazines. Teachers can use one book, and project it for the class, or use a set of books for reading groups to use as supplemental nonfiction reading. If funding is an issue, teachers might write a grant for the books, or approach their local parent group for support. This is a unit that students will love, and teachers will use year after year.
