SPIN A RHYME: SHORT VOWEL CHUNKS
This 61 page unit is great for reinforcing short-vowel word chunks, rhyming and vocabulary with students. It includes a student record sheet for tracking progress.
Who benefits from the use of these activities?:
Strategic Learners/English Language Learners (Tier 2-3). These learners receive sound/symbol reinforcement, language and vocabulary support, and comprehension checks through verbalization and drawing pictures to show meaning. This is a great resource for targeting students' deficits in skills in order to remediate existing problems and prevent more severe problems.
On-Level Learners (Tier 1) This unit reinforces sound usage, identification of word chunks/families, rhyming words, and comprehension checks of vocabulary through drawing activities.
Advanced Learners This unit challenges above-level students to find multiple meanings of words, and create their own Spin A Rhyme games using the blank spinner page that is provided. These students also use the back side of the sheet to write sentences using the words they create. Paring above-level learners with Tier 1,2 and 3 students can help in vocabulary development as they think, pair and share.
This unit covers the following short vowel word chunks/families:
Short a: ab, ack, ad, ag, am, amp, an, and, ap, at, atch,
Short e: eck, ed, eg, en, end, ent, ept, est, et
Short i: ib, ick, ig, ill, in, ip, ish, ist, it, itch
Short o: ob, ock, og, ong, op, oss, ot, oth, ox
Short u: ub, uck, ud, ug, um, ump, un, unch, unk, unny,
