This 20 page document includes spine label related practice pages (worksheets), exit ticket assessments, and a task card center (there is a version for either horizontal or vertical spine labels). I use it for 4 weeks of lesson plans for one grade in my primary school library, but you could also use the different assessments to differentiate lessons for students of differing ability or grade level. It provides material for fiction call numbers/spine labels. Nonfiction is not included in this packet.
1. VERTICAL Spine Label Task Cards, Answer Form, Answer Key. Print out and then laminate the task cards. Students will write the correct spine label for the task cards on the answer form. You can use the answer key to check their work. I use the task cards as a center, but you can also use them in a pocket chart or under a document camera for whole group practice.
1b. HORIZONTAL Spine Label Task Cards, Answer Form, Answer Key. This was added as other librarians requested a task card center that could be used with their horizontal spine labels. Enjoy :)
2. There are two sets of printable bookmarks that can either be used as exit tickets (a quick way to assess what students have learned at the end of a lesson), as an assessment, or as a fun way for students to practice what they have learned at home. One set has vertical spine labels, the other horizontal.
3. Spine label worksheets with included book covers. Students look at the printed book covers on the worksheet to answer spine label questions.
4. Spine label worksheets for use with actual books. You give the students two actual books (I bring books from home that don't already have spine labels from the library attached) to answer spine label questions. I usually do this worksheet with students in pairs, but it is also good for individual practice.
Both sets of worksheets include a copy with vertical and horizontal spine labels.
I usually follow this unit up with the Alphabet Avengers task cards I have for sale in my store.
