Color a fish and place it in a fish bowl. Color a dog and place it in front of a dog house. Color a bird and place it in a bird cage. Color a butterfly and let it rest on a beautiful flower.
Just attach a paper to a pencil or straw and spin to see the colored images. You'll see the fish in its fish bowl, the dog in its dog house, the bird in its cage or the butterfly resting on a flower - it's a fun illusion
that students love! Choose from images to color or print them in color.
This activity requires very basic materials (paper, crayons, tape, a pencil or straw) and just a few minutes to complete. It can easily be extended if students want to draw their own illusions. I included a blank page with lines for this purpose!
I've also included a video
that shows you how to make an illusion and two videos
of an illusion as it spins - one close to the camera and one farther away. Does the distance make a difference in how well the illusion works? Does it matter if you color it with bright or dark colors? What if you spin it slowly or quickly?
