Using this wheel, teachers can prepare lessons that spiral through multiple Common Core standards. One half of the wheel is used for literary texts and the opposite half is for informational texts. Anchor standards 1 and 10 are used continuously while spiraling through the strands.
Like eating a pie, start with the first three reading standards as your first "slice" of learning. Have students work together using the first three speaking and listening standards as they build lower DOK 1 & 2 level knowledge of the text. Use this opportunity to help students acquire the necessary vocabulary for understanding the text as well as the basic language skills modeled within the text. At this this point, use language standards 4-6 (only the language standards are in reverse order). During each lesson, always find ways for students to write. For this first "slice" of learning, use writing standards 1-3.
Next, move on to the second "slice" guiding students to a deeper level of understanding and writing (DOK 3).
Finish off with the last learning slice by having students prepare to share their knowledge through project-based learning activities (DOK 4).
