The initial unit of "The Spirit of Texas" Texas history curriculum introduces students to Texas symbols, the Texas flag, the Six Flags Flown Over Texas, the Texas pledge, the Texas state song, and the Texas state seal.
Students begin by reading a short passage from the "Daily Reading" text found at the beginning of the unit. Following the silent or oral reading, students will answer the passage comprehension questions, and proceed to the Activity Guide section.
The Activity Guide section offers a multitude of cross-curricular activities related to the topic of the passage read. Math, science, crafts, vocabulary (vocabulary is bold/italicized in the daily reading text), geography, copy work, writing prompts, and many more exercises are suggested, along with reproducible worksheets. Also included are recommended books, art to explore, related websites, music and songs to learn, places to visit, and a supply list.
Reproducible handouts to be used to reinforce reading passage concepts include:
A to Z Chart
Double Venn Diagram
Other Texas Symbols Research Activity
Recipe for Chili (state dish)
Multiple Texas Symbol Art Projects
Many additional cross-curricular activities to use with this unit are found in the Activity Guide pages.
The reading and activities included in this unit should keep your students busy and happy for at least 1-2 weeks!
