This unit of spoken word poetry is meant to culminate in a performance by a set of partners. Students select a common topic/theme, and then write a shared poem in two points-of-view, offering the audience two voices on one subject.
This unit can be complementary to a literature or nonfiction unit of study, or can stand on its own.
I have taught Spoken Word poetry for 6 years. It is an incredible outlet for teen voice and opinion. It supplements Common Core standards in listening, speaking, argument with evidence writing, etc.
It is a great way to build a nurturing, open-minded community in a high school classroom.
