Halloween is one of my absolute favorite times of the year. I’ll bet it’s one of your kiddos’ favorite times as well. There’s the spooky songs, the jack-o-lanterns, the candy… but the very best part?? COSTUMES!!.
There are about a million different costumes out there, and lucky for us music teachers, a million different rhythm patterns, that go along with them. Lucky for you, I’ve put together a handful of super fun and popular costumes and turned it into the perfect improvisation and composition unit for Halloween time! Buckle up, your kids are going to love this unit!!
Spooky Night Improvisation & Composition is for many levels of rhythm practice. I’ve included multiple sets of rhythms so that you can use this with many different classes and skill levels throughout the month of October. Yes indeed, this is your one stop shop for Halloween rhythm improv!
This set gives you everything you need for five lesson segments to work on rhythmic patterns. From a brand new chant, a couple new games, and the perfect scaffolds & sequencing leading your kiddos from improvisation to composition, this unit is super accessible for you and your tiny musicians. You’ll get everything you need to be improvising in no time—Halloween style!!
***The Goods Inside***
Teacher Talk with Anne - You'll get my tips for how I use the resources in this unit. I outline five different lesson segments for perfectly sequencing pattern play, improvisation & composition.
Halloween, Halloween Notation - A brand new chant with two verses, designed specifically for this set! Also included are pedagogical uses, suggestions for teaching & a few different game variations--completely separate from the additional activities in this set.
Spooky Night Improv Presentation - Let the not so spooky mummy lead your students through echoing different costume patterns, and then stringing them together to make longer phrases. Create an ABA form with the new chant, use the question mark slides to get your kids comfortable adding in their own ideas, and you’re off to be improvising in no time! (Both PDF & Powerpoint versions are included.)
Improvisation Cards - Once your kiddos are ready, use these visual aids to help them create different speech phrases, either in small groups or individually—this is the stepping stone from improvisation to composition!! (Both printer-friendly color & black and white are included.)
Composition Cards, Levels I & II - These cards have both the costume pictures and formal notation (both with and without noteheads) for students to begin their compositions. Level I rhythms include quarter note, eighth note, and rest. Level II rhythms include permutations of sixteenth notes and eighth & sixteenth note combinations. (Both printer-friendly color & black and white are included.)
Composition Worksheets - Two versions are included: one for brainstorming, and one for writing out the “Halloween, Halloween” rhyme AND their composition. Use with or without the composition cards. Versions for both level I & level II are included.
This set is for you if you are ready to embrace the Halloween crazy through a little bit of improvisation and composition. Use this fun Halloween costume rhythm set to be purposeful, sequential, and joyful!!
