A matrix board can be a versatile therapy activity and easily adapted to the needs of individual students.
Students learn to converge an intersection from vertical and horizontal points. There are opportunities for both receptive and expressive practice.
It’s an optimal closed set structured listening task for children who have recently received a cochlear implant or who are learning to listen or extend auditory memory.
Auditory attention and memory can be expanded as the child’s skill level grows by creating longer cues. Matrix boards are also a great way to structure simple sentence formulation, story telling and a wide variety of syntactic structures including verb tense, subject-verb agreement and use of articles.
Picture cards are included that have a person's name, an object representing a sport and a time related word. The speaker needs to create a sentence using the three components. For example, Pete had a 2:00 golf game. The listener places a token on the matrix board at the intersection of Pete and golf. For more of a challenge you may opt to increase the complexity of the sentence to include a person, a time, and a sport such as “Tim had a 2:00 baseball playoff” The listener would locate the intersection of Tim and the baseball and put down the 2:00 card.
The bigger task cards that show a sports item, a time and a name can be used for formulating new and potentially more complex or abstract sentences. The sentences can be as creative/silly and as long as you want to make them; making this an activity for a wider age range.
Use of different carrier phrases can be created to target different verb tense or other grammatical structures of your choice.
Time cards are included but you could also laminate the matrix and have older children write in the time at the intersection with a dry erase marker. The board could also be opened on a computer screen and the tokens could be applied directly to the screen with fun tack or a small piece of painters tape.
This can also be printed in duplicate and used as a barrier game or battleship type guessing game using the same type of grammatical structures.
