Description

If the children know the +9 trick, they are well on their way to fact fluency. When adding, +9 will always be one less than +10, and +10 is easy! When subtracting, -9 will always be one more than -10, and -10 is easy! This game will help them practice that important trick!

Why use Adding and Subtracting Nines with Spring Flower Theme? Research shows skills are mastered by frequent practice. Games are a great motivator for that frequent practice. Brain research tells us that adding an element of fun helps children remember.

How it works: This game gives the children practice with the "nine trick" (one less than +10 in addition, one more than -10 in subtraction!) in a fun way. This resource explains how to use the "nine trick" in addition and subtraction and gives loads of practice with each, both with single and double digits.

There are several versions of the game, with easier cards, harder cards, addition, and subtraction. There are a couple of suggestions for use, or you can make up your own!

One version of this game is set up like the game "Old Maid", where the last player to get the final card becomes "Spring Rain". My students really enjoy this game, and there are always plenty of giggles to see where the "Spring Rain" lands!

What's included: This resource has directions and suggestions. It also has 24 addition and 24 subtraction cards for the "easier" set (10 or less plus 9) and 36 addition and 36 subtraction cards for the more difficult set (10 through 100 plus 9). In addition, there are 4 "Spring Rain" cards.
