This kit contains all you need to give students practice listing words in ABC order, while exploring content words related to spring.
Sequencing in alphabetical order
is one way of sorting words. Categorizing or sorting words is an excellent activity for children because it helps their brains develop. Sorting the same words in different ways is even more beneficial.
In these activities, students alphabetize 5 to 10 words at a time. There are 5 worksheets. On Worksheet A, there are 10 words to be alphabetized, but only 5 at a time.
As the alphabetizing skill progresses in difficulty on the various worksheets, the reading level of the words generally increases.
The first three worksheets involve alphabetizing to the 1st letter in the word, but the last two worksheets require alphabetizing to the 2nd and 3rd/4th letter.
The set includes:
→3 sorting to the 1st letter
→1 sorting to the 2nd letter
→1 sorting to the 3rd/4th letters
→Alphabet cue at top of 2 worksheets
→Optional word cards to be used for sorting in ABC order
→Blank worksheets and word cards for individualization
You can use the set in several ways:
✓as a follow-up activity to lesson on alphabetizing
✓using the blank cards and worksheets and student names
✓with small or large group
✓to individualize alphabetizing practice
✓as a literary workstation activity
✓as a partner activity
✓for early finishers
Although there is no Common Core standard specifically focused on alphabetizing, the Standards do include the use of reference materials, both digital and print, as well as categorization of words:
