Spring is here! Spring themed sentence work for whole group and then small group or pair instruction.

Help children learn how to work on and expand their sentences to include more detail.

~ Revised March 9th to include a black and white version of the colored posters seen in the file.


There are 3 steps to this activity that should be implemented in order.

The first step involves modeling from the teacher. The poster that use initially will be a self-correction tool for students and can be a classroom display.

The second step requires students to put sentences in order of least detail to most detail (expanding the sentence each time) and the third

The final step involves students putting each word together to form the sentences seen in the poster.


There are 11 different Spring themed posters that require all 3 steps.

Posters have between 3-4 sentences.

*** Here is an example of the sentence seen in the image to your left:

Blue Bird (4 sentences)
The bird is singing.
The blue bird is singing.
The blue bird is singing sweetly.
The blue bird is singing sweetly on the fence.

and another:

The Rain Falls (3 sentences)
Raindrops are falling.
Raindrops are falling quickly.
Raindrops are falling quickly on the umbrella.

and another:

My Big Strawberry (4 sentences)
I ate a strawberry.
I ate a big strawberry.
I ate a big, red strawberry.
I ate a big, red strawberry at lunch.
