Poetry notebooks are a fun way to practice! Readings can be done as a whole group (choral reading) or in student pairs. For fun, my students love to read their poems to stuffed animals! Always a hit!
Poems have been sized so that, once cut around the border, they will fit in a spiral notebook. My 3rd grade students have a poetry notebook and each week we add a poem or two to it. I introduce the poems on Monday, students glue them in their notebook and then they can use them during our Daily 5 block the rest of the week. I also have students bring their notebooks with them during guided reading time so I can quickly listen to how their reading fluency is progressing. I have found that it is a fun way to practice reading aloud, thus improving student's reading fluency! They love practicing them individually and even more during shared reading time!!
