This math - measurement activity was created to allow my students to have fun outside, while hunting for objects that are of a certain length. I teach measurement in the spring; so it is the perfect time to make the most of the outdoors! I utilized this activity as an extension to practicing measuring length in my classroom. In my world (2nd grade) we are to simply practice measuring length with centimeters/inches. But to go a step beyond, I expose them to "equivalents" from inches to feet, feet to yards, etc. After all, they think this kind of "challenge" opportunities are fun. So this activity also ties into the concept of equivalents. At this point, students should be able to have a basic idea of an object that could be a certain length whether it be in inches or yards, etc. So they are applying this idea, to find objects they think could be a certain length, then measuring to find out how close they were by then measuring the object they chose to find the exact measurement. Just wanted to share with anyone who thought this could be beneficial for their kiddos as well!
