Because I am a third grade teacher in Texas, these pieces were written to address the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. I feel they also address Common Core Standards.
TEKS Grade 3
(6) Students understand, make inferences, and draw conclusions about the structures and elements of poetry and provide evidence from text supporting their understanding. Students are expected to describe the characteristics of various forms of poetry and how they create imagery (e.g. narrative poetry, lyrical poetry, humorous poetry, and free verse).
(4 b) Students use context to determine meaning of unfamiliar words or to distinguish among multiple meaning words and homographs.
(4 c) Students identify and use antonyms, synonyms, homographs, and homophones.
Common Core 3.5
Refer to parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about a text, using terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza; describe how each successive part builds on earlier sections.
The poems are followed by 6 - 11 comprehension questions written in test-taking language and format. The questions cover the types and structure of poems, making inferences, drawing conclusions, and using context to determine word meaning.
An answer key is provided for each poem.
