Need to blow off some STEAM after spring testing season? Take a look at this Spring STEM Challenge that will infuse enthusiasm and positive energy back into your classroom. Students also work on critical thinking, collaboration, drawing, and measurement in addition to scientific engineering skills while having a blast in class!
This product presents a scenario to the students where Bertie the Bird needs the students to design a bird nest prototype that will withstand the strong winds of spring thunderstorms and keep Bertie in the nest! Students will then create a bird nest using Easter grass, jelly beans, and a marshmallow peep (among other common items) and test the nest using a hair dryer to simulate the strong spring winds. Students complete the STEM Design Steps throughout this process and eventually will test their prototypes, troubleshoot any issues, and redesign to try to yield a better product. Students can compete against each other in a friendly competition to see which nest can travel the farthest without the bird falling out of the nest.
