There are endless possibilities for the use of these cards.
The following are just a sample of ideas that could be used in Math centres.
Number Lines: Create a number line.
Counting by…: Count by 2s, 5s, 10s etc.
Odd and Even: Collect the odd or even cards.
Higher or Lower: Students are given a number and have to find all the cards higher/lower than that number.
t groups: Students are given a number and have to find the remaining numbers to complete the t. Eg. Student is given the number 36. They then need to find the number before, the number after, 10 before and 10 after.
The following are just a sample of games to be played with 2 or more players.
Stack ‘em up: Deal out cards face down to all players. Players stack cards in a pile in front of them. All players turn over the top card and the player with the highest card keeps the other cards from that round. If a player shows a Wild Card, they instantly win that round. If two Wild Cards are shown, both cards get shuffled back into the player’s pile. Keep playing until all cards have been played. The player with the most cards collected is the winner. Game alternatives: *Lowest card is the winner. *Player with Wild Card gets an extra card from each player. *Highest/lowest odd/even card wins.
Add ‘em up: Cards get placed in a pile in the middle. Players collect 2 cards and find the total. Player with the highest total collects the cards played that round. If a player draws a Wild Card, they instantly win that round. If both totals are the same, the cards get returned back into the middle pile. Once all cards have been played, player with the most cards is the winner. Game alternatives: *Lowest total is the winner. *Highest/lowest odd/even card is the winner.
Take me away!: Cards get placed in a pile in the middle. Players draw a card and takes that number away from 100. The player with the lowest total is the winner and collects all cards from that round. If a player draws a Wild Card, they instantly win that round. The player with the most cards when all cards have been played is the winner. Game alternatives: *Highest total is the winner. *Highest/lowest odd/even card is the winner.
Have you got..?: Each player gets 5 cards with the remaining cards being placed face-down in the middle. Students use their place value knowledge to ask for cards. Eg “Have you got a card with a 2 in the tens/ones column?” If the answer is no, a new card is collected from the middle pile. Player with a Wild Card can another question if they get a “no” response. The player with the most cards collected is the winner.
