In this activity, students are given a folded paper with either an emoticon of a spy or a patriotic American. Students are told to not show their paper to anyone. Students are then to form the largest group possible which contain only patriots, no spies. Spies are instructed to try to infiltrate groups. The activity simulates the paranoia of the McCarthy era during the Second Red Scare. I have had students make remarks such as "I felt just like Ethel Rosenberg!" This would also make a good introduction to the Crucible.
