Product Description
• This activity pairs the concepts of volume of solids with straight sides with the idea of some of the patterns of squared numbers.
• Students discover the color patterns for each of the steps and color the enclosed grid sheets with the correct colors for each step. (If you use blocks with colors that are different than this model, make your own answer keys by making a second copy of the blank grid pages and coloring them with the colors that you used for the structure. )
• Students should be noticing that each of the square steps can be found inside the next step and only the blocks around two edges of the new square are added onto the smaller step to make that next larger one.
• Once the coloring is finished (or some students may notice the number patterns before then) students should complete the information on the table. See a copy of this in the preview with the answer key.
• Get ready for a great discussion about the pattern of squaring numbers and adding their consecutive sums as students work with this structure and complete the table.
• Some of my students wrote the following equations in the last column of the table Your students may find others.
I will use step 4 for as an example:
• (4X4) + (3X3) + (2X2) + (1X1) = 30
• (4X4) + 14 (which is the total number of blocks up to this point) = 30
• 1 + 4 + 9 + 15 = 30 (this is the total numbers in each step added together)
• 14 + 16 = 30 (this is the total number of blocks up to this step added to the number of blocks in this step)
