After taking many upper level math classes in college, I noticed how often the basics were used and how often I used square numbers and square roots! I was always glad I knew these facts by heart, but I have also come to realize that many students do not, and it makes math in the upper grades and high school slow and frustrating. I designed this product to give my students extra practice to improve their speed with square numbers and square roots to make more complex math situations much easier! Included are three activities that work great in centers, partner work, small groups, whole class activities, enrichment, resource groups, extra practice or intervention groups. You could even assign this as homework to mix things up a bit and to encourage family/parent involvement at home! My team and I like to have "math parties" where we mix up all of our classes and rotate through different activities that review a concept we've previously learned to keep it fresh in our students' minds.
The games are easy to set up, you just need a printer & a pair of scissors to cut the cards out! I prefer to laminate math games so that I only have to go through the prep work once. Check out the preview above to check out the product.
Matching Game: These matching cards are great for students. It's a great way to mix up things in your classroom. You can create a fun competitive element and challenge students to increase their own time each round.
Memory: Played just like the original, students flip two cards over to try to make matches.
Flip & Cover: Use the included number cards to try to fill the board before your classmates.
The first two games can be easily separated to include just square numbers or square roots.
An answer key is not specifically included, but the cards are set up to match in the file, so you can print multiple slides to a page to create an answer key for your students.
**This product is designed to practice speed of math facts, not to provide an initial and deep understanding of what it means to square a number-that should come first! :)
