Squiggle writing is a huge hit in my class! The students love to turn that squiggle into something and create a story for it. It is easy and it can be a great way to pull in even the most reluctant of writers! So what do they do? First, they turn their squiggle into something by using the squiggle as the starting point to draw out a picture. It could become an ice cream sundae, a mountain with skiers flying down the slopes, or a puppy dogs with a sloppy grin! Then, students use their picture as a writing prompt and start writing!
This activity can be adapted to fit any type of genre. If you are studying a specific genre in class, have the students do squiggle writing in that style!
This packaged includes a blank template that can be used for squiggle stories. These blank templates also include extra lined sheets for if you have a student that loves to write! There are also a couple different pre-drawn squiggles for you to start out with if you choose!
Using the blank templates:
- Print off one template. Use a marker or pen to draw a squiggle. Photocopy for the class. This works well if you want to quickly make a few different variations at once! Students love the option of choice, even if it is choosing between three different squiggles.
- Print off the blank templates for the students to draw their own squiggle. They can then be collected and handed out at random so that students are not creating with their own squiggle.
- Print off the blank templates for the students to draw their own squiggle to base their writing on.
Extra fun: Wiggle Wednesdays are a favorite in our classroom! We start the day with a squiggle drawing every Wednesday and add it to our writing portfolio.
