In my first grade classroom, I do a modified version of the "daily 5". I have 6 centers that my students rotate through including a writing center called their "squiggle" writing.
At this center, they are given 5 minutes to turn the "squiggle" into a creative drawing. The rest of the center time is spent writing sentences, a story, or a paragraph about their squiggle drawing. I keep their squiggles all year long in a portfolio and it's amazing to see their growth through the school year as writers!
