Description
Help the squirrel find his acorn! Practicing rhymes is fun with this hands-on rhyming activity for a squirrels or fall theme. This simple rhyming game is perfect for ELA or literacy centers in preschool, prek, kindergarten, SPED, and RTI.
Contents:
•20 squirrel mats: Each mat includes a picture of one squirrel featuring an image. The images are mostly CVC words and easy to rhyme. 4 mats are provided for each middle vowel. Only short vowels are used.
•20 acorn cards:Each acorn card features an image that rhymes with only one squirrel mat.
How to play:
This activity is best suited for children who have already been introduced to the concept of rhyming and can identify rhymes in songs and stories. This rhyming printable is great as an individual activity or a group activity. To play:
1. Line up the squirrel mats and name the picture on the squirrel.
2. Place the individual acorn cards in a stack.
3. Pick up an acorn card and name the picture.
4. Look for the rhyming squirrel mat and place the acorn card on it.
I have used mostly easy CVC words for these cards so that the rhymes are simple. This printable includes 4 rhyming pairs for each short vowel.
Rhyming Pairs Used:

Activity Suggestions and Variations
• Use in your literacy center or station for individual work
• Use in a small group activity or game
• Add velcro to the back of the cards to create a file folder game
• Add magnets to the back of the cards to use on a cookie sheet or magnetic board
• Add the acorn cards to a fall themed sensory bin and pull out to match with the mats
Other ways to use these cards:
• If you have spellers in your class, use the acorn cards with magnetic letters or a movable alphabet to spell the CVC words
