Have a Cariboo? You can use these fun Cariboo card sets WITH or WITHOUT a Cariboo. It's perfect for your St. Patrick's Day themed lessons.
This 12 page download includes:
1) Directions for use WITH OR WITHOUT a CARIBOO game!
2) Visuals with familiar items that you can use to teach the concept of answering who, what, when, why, and where questions. NOTE: Utilize the teaching/reference cards to actually teach the skill before playing. Playing is mostly for assessing/practicing the skill, but teaching should occur first.
3) 1 set of cards for your Cariboo game doors and TWO sets of questions cards to go with them (color coded for easy sorting)
4) Wh- questions in the form of a list that correspond to the pictures in the Cariboo doors.

To play Cariboo the traditional way, stack the corresponding cards that contain the wh- questions to make a DECK (using either card set 1 marked with a green shamrock or card set 2 marked with an orange shamrock). Choose the ones that meet your students’ needs. If students are readers, players should pick a card from the question deck first. The student should then scan the images on the Cariboo doors and tell you which one they think answers the question. If they are verbal, they should NOT be allowed to open the Cariboo door until they verbalize the answer. If students are unable to answer the question, you can simply model which door they should open - such as “Who has the biggest shamrock? THIS BOY has the biggest one. Now your turn. Who is wearing a hat??” For any attempt, allow them to open the door with the person wearing a hat, and then encourage them to verbalize it.
****For non-readers, there’s no need to use the questions cards. Instead, I’ve included a list of all questions that you can simply read from (including questions for expansion). Be sure to cut those out and keep them with the corresponding set. You can even make up your own questions! This is how I typically play since most of my students working on this skill cannot read.
For a twist, assign one student to be the “player” and another peer (fellow student) to describe the card on the Cariboo that the player must open such as, “this card has the person with a beard who is wearing yellow pants and hiding behind something.” The describer must express himself so that the player knows exactly which Cariboo door to open.
