Description
This money-saving St. Patrick's Day bundle includes both interactive digital coding Boom Cards and unplugged (printable) materials that provide fun ways for young students to practice and learn the basics of computer coding and programming.
The engaging activities provide practice in both following code and creating code as well as sequencing skills, problem-solving, logical thinking, cause and effect skills, and computational thinking. Students will learn the importance of correct sequencing in coding, which is a fundamental aspect.
Print Materials
You receive a printable hands-on St. Patrick's Day coding activity plus 20 printable coding worksheets with answer keys.
The printable activities can be used as an introduction to coding prior to using the digital Boom Cards or in conjunction with the digital Boom Cards.
Hands-On Coding Activity
In this St. Patrick's Day coding activity, students first design a map or grid of Leprechaun Land and then act as computer programmers to design basic code in the correct sequence that will command a leprechaun to follow the path and move to a select location (end point).
Many different designs, end points, and codes can be created making each play different!
This activity can be done whole group, individually, or with partners.
You receive:
- 16 different design pieces
- 4 different movable leprechauns
- Directional arrow coding cards
- A map / grid of Leprechaun Land
- Printable code recording page
Printable Coding Practice Worksheets with Answer Keys
You also receive 10 printable St. Patrick's Day practice pages for following code with answer keys.
Students draw the path through Leprechaun Land by following the code in the correct sequence starting in the bottom left box with the star. Complete the pages with pencils, crayons, Dot Painters, or place them in page protectors and use dry erase markers so pages can be used over and over again.
Also includes 10 printable St. Patrick's Day worksheets for creating code with answer keys.
Students create the code for the highlighted path through Leprechaun Land by drawing directional arrows in each coding box across the top.
Digital Materials
You also receive 2 digital St. Patrick's Day coding Boom Card decks that are self-checking and include audio directions so young students can work independently. They can be used on your interactive whiteboard, iPads, desktop, tablet, smartphone or with Google classroom.
In the first coding deck, students move a leprechaun to the correct place in Leprechaun Land by following the code. This helps students learn the importance of following each step of code in the correct sequence in order to get the the desired response and why sequence matters in a computer program.
In the second coding deck, students create the code for the highlighted blue path through Leprechaun Land by dragging and dropping the arrows to the boxes. They then move the leprechaun from the box with the gold star along the path according to the code they created. This helps students learn the importance of creating each step of code in the correct sequence in order to get the desired response and why sequence matters in a computer program.
Each St. Patrick's Day coding deck includes unique cards that play in random order so each play of the deck is different.
