Product Description
This fractions packet is full of fun and engaging activities that give students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of fractions as they solve St. Patrick’s themed problems. On the “Table of Contents” page in the preview you will find a brief description of the concepts being taught and what the students will be able to do as a result of participating in the activity. Sections of this product include:
“How Many Shamrocks are under the Hat?”
Teacher Information/Guided practice-”how to” determine what fractional part of the shamrock group is not visible under the hat
“How Many Shamrocks are under the Hat?”
Students determine what fraction of a given number of shamrocks is under the hat, show their work, and record their answer.
“Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers”
Teacher Information/Guided practice-”how to” add simple fractions with an improper fraction sum, then convert it to a mixed number
“Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers”
Given groups of 1,2, or 3 leaves of a four leaf clover, students count the total number of leaves and determine how many “whole” four leaf clovers (plus any fractional parts) are in the group. Students record their answer as an improper fraction and (if applicable) a mixed number.
"Painting Shamrocks”
Students “participate” in a given story problem in which a class is painting shamrocks to raise money for playground equipment. Shelves with white shamrocks are given with directions that include fractional parts and what color those fractions should be ‘painted”. Students color shamrocks according to directions. This section provides a wealth of opportunity for identifying and determining equivalent fractions as well as grouping unlike fractions to make “one whole”.
“Equivalent Fractions”
Students follow a color code, matching shamrocks labeled with fractions with an equivalent fraction.
Several of these sections include more than one practice page covering the same concepts. An answer key with a duplicate copy of each page with the answers filled in is included.
