Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in your science classroom with these fun and challenging differentiated leprechaun worksheets. In these worksheets, the students will create Punnett squares to determine the likelihood of certain genotypes and phenotypes in leprechauns.
There are three worksheets in this document. The first worksheet (Worksheet A) is less vocabulary heavy and is meant to be used for students who need to focus mainly on genotype, phenotype, and Punnett squares. The parents’ genotypes are provided in this worksheet. The second and third worksheets (Worksheet B and C) are meant for advanced students so they include more vocabulary words like hybrid, heterozygous, purebred, and homozygous in addition to genotype and phenotype. They require students to use context clues and their knowledge of genetics vocabulary to determine the genotype of the parents before creating and solving Punnett squares. The difference between Worksheet B and C, is Worksheet B has the parents’ genotype hints underlined to assist students. Worksheet C is the most difficult worksheet. The worksheets have been created in this way so teachers can provide three levels of differentiated instruction for their students.
Alternatively, the worksheets can be given on different days to increase the rigor gradually. For example, all students can complete Worksheet A on Monday, Worksheet B on Tuesday, and Worksheet C on Wednesday.
All worksheets have the same questions—the questions are just phrased differently to provide various levels of challenge. The answers are the same for all worksheets. A complete key is included.
Each worksheet comes in both color and black and white versions.
