This Saint Patrick’s Day activity, designed for 4th graders, engages students while they practice. Your students will find this fraction work rigorous! In the first puzzle they sort fractions using benchmark numbers. In the second, they solve addition and subtraction equations and then determine which range their solution falls into before they know what color to use. The third puzzle requires they solve word problems and then determine which range their solution falls into in order to know which color to use.
These color-by-number pictures are challenging conceptually because they require that students sort fractions for all three puzzles-not simply use an algorithm.
There are three color-by-number pictures for students to solve and color while practicing their skills in:
•comparing fractions-which benchmark number is the fraction closest to
•adding and subtracting fractions-which range does the solution fall into
•solving word problems using adding and subtracting-which range does the solution fall into
These activities are perfect for math practice in the days leading up to Saint Patrick’s Day, for early finishers, or for morning work.
