St. Patrick's Day: Are you looking for a fun reading activity for St. Patrick's Day or on the days leading up to March 17th? How about using this fun themed informational "fact find". Your students will enjoy this fun 'fact find' style word search! If your students are like mine, they love these puzzles.

The facts all relate to 3 St. Patrick's Day topics: rainbows, clover, and gold .

Keep the challenge level in mind when deciding if this "all about St. Patrick's Day" fact find will work for your class. Words are found forward, backward, up, down, and diagonal. I would consider it on the challenging side since students are looking for words in all directions. A few of the parts might be difficult for third graders to understand unless further explanation is given, such the term 'refract' and how light is bent.

This is not just any 'ole puzzle. It doesn't just include words to find. It includes fun facts for 3 St. Patrick's Day topics. They are fun and random, but will allow for fun discussions. The format uses bullet marks, which can help your students remember the information. Within each fact, a word (or words) is underlined. Those are the words the students will find in the puzzle. For example, one sentence says, "Gold is a metal and a good conductor of heat and electricity. Being a conductor means heat and electricity moves though it quickly." The word 'consuctor' is underlined, and that is the word students will find.

I use word searches to introduce vocabulary, or even just give it as morning work to introduce the topic of the day. Perfect for a sub, too.

There are many options for using this word search 'fact find'. One option is to have students partner up and practice fluency. They can take turns reading the sentences. This can be used for a writing activity. Have them take the facts from the puzzle and turn them into a paragraph, changing out some of the words to make it their own. Parents can work with their child to find the words.They can even fold it in half and glue it into an interactive notebook for future reference when they lack a writing topic. It's great for triggering ideas. No matter when or how you use it, kids are sure to enjoy reading the fun facts about St. Patrick's Day. Feel free to be creative and use it in your classroom however you would like.

rare (# of 4 leaf compared to 3 leaf)
Lincoln (carried lucky clover)
shamrock (definition)
St. Patrick's Day
faith, hope, love, luck
Japan (record holding clover)
white light
passing through (sunlight through rain and moisture to form rainbow)
sun, water (making your own rainbow)
conductor (gold is a good one and definition)
Karats (24 pure gold)
soft (metal)
yellow (word derives from a word meaning yellow)
Vaults (where most gold is stored)
underground (% scientists think has not been discovered)
