St. Patrick didn't wear green, he wore BLUE! Fact or Fib?! Let your students explore the myths and facts of this popular holiday while strengthening their close reading and critical thinking skills!

My students love celebrating holidays, but they are always a little curious about why we take part in certain traditions. I always like celebrating holidays in my classroom but worry about spending time on activities that were really just for FUN. So that's why I created this activity pack. It allows us to engage in some holiday celebrations while still sneaking in some really valuable reading, writing, and critical thinking skills!

Here’s what you’ll get in this packet:

THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS of text about the myths of St. Patrick's day so children within your classroom can have a shared experience with close reading content, at a readability level suitable for their independent reading comprehension. Leveled to 8th grade, 6th grade, and 4th grade readability, using Flesch-Kincaid grade level equivalents) *LEVELS ARE MARKED IN THE LOWER CORNER OF EACH PAGE*

Anticipation guides with answer keys written at corresponding reading comprehension levels
-True/False pre-reading activity helps activate schema and build interest in the topic
-Post-reading activity (on same page) allows students to reflect on predictions versus facts they encountered in the text, and make changes to statements to make them true while citing location of text-based evidence

Eight Higher Level Thinking Task cards for Open-Ended Discussion, Thinking, and Writing —Three highest levels of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy: Analyze (2 cards), Evaluate (2 cards), and Create (4 cards).

Accompanying activity sheets for each of the eight activities

Blank lined writing paper to use with the task cards if needed

Directions for Implementation

BONUS Story and Creative Writing Craftivity! Students read a true story (5th-grade readability) about the world’s smallest park. Then they get to create their own tiny park in order to try and lure “the only leprechaun colony west of Ireland” to their park. Students can also write/create/act out an advertisement for their park in hopes of attracting the leprechauns.
