Here is a fun and creative differentiated reading and writing activity for St. Patrick's Day so you don't have to spend hours creating one yourself!

My students love, love, love learning weird little tidbits about holidays, people, and places, and they REALLY love learning about world records. I love sharing those things with them, but of course, I also need to maximize our learning time together. That's why this fun little activity comes in so handy! This resource combines reading a short informational text about the world's tiniest park, reflecting on the text, completing a creative writing activity, AND doing a fun craft. Read below to see what's included.

Here’s what you’ll find in this packet:

THREE different levels of original text on the same topic so you can differentiate. Children within your classroom can have a shared experience with content, at a readability level better suited for their independent reading comprehension. The three levels (6th, 5th, and 4th grades) were measured using Flesch-Kincaid grade level equivalents *LEVELS ARE MARKED IN THE LOWER CORNER OF EACH ARTICLE using the following code: grade 6: square, grade 5: triangle, and grade 4: circle (The more sides the shape has, the more difficult the readability)

Four reflective comprehension questions that could be used to guide a post-reading discussion or as a quick check on comprehension.

Craftivity—Students will be in charge of making a visual representation of their tiny park. It can be made on the computer, hand-drawn, or created in three dimensions using drawings, clip art, or a combination. You could even build your park with building blocks or sculpt it from clay. I have included template for making a triorama (like a triangular diorama) for convenience.

Creative Writing Assignment—Students are asked to create their own tiny parks in order to attract the leprechaun colony from Mill Ends Park in Oregon to their own park. Then they are responsible for creating some sort of written advertisement for the park. (Many of the written options are well-suited for sharing out with the class (commercial, play, song, rap) and I highly recommend doing so, if you can!)

Two planning sheets to help with brainstorming, as well as eight different pages to help with writing commercials, a poem, song, or rap, and pages for creating a flyer or travel brochure.

A generic product rubric to evaluate products students create during the unit.
