Looking for a way to incorporate more writing into science class or make language arts class more integrated? Try the Leprechaun Trap Science and Persuasive Writing 5-Day Challenge! This activity includes collaboration, critical thinking, drawing, engineering, persuasive writing, and public speaking skills.
This product presents a scenario to the students where Mr. O'Malley, the mayor of Dublin, has heard that leprechauns are planning on invading city hall on St. Patrick's Day. He created a contest for teams to create the most effective leprechaun trap using limited materials and time. Contest participants will need to create a persuasive presentation about the trap prototype they designed to present to the concerned citizens of Dublin at a city council meeting. The residents will then vote for the most effective trap to be used to protect the city's treasures.
Students will have five days to complete this project.
→ Day 1: Preparing to build the Leprechaun Trap Prototype
→ Day 2: Building the Leprechaun Trap Prototype and Starting Persuasive Pre-Writing
→ Day 3: Work on Presentation Tasks
→ Day 4: Prepare for Presentation - script writing and rehearsal
→ Day 5: Deliver Presentations; Class Voting
Students will have a Concerned Citizen Checklist which encourages the students to listen carefully during each presentation. This checklist will then be used to help students decide who to vote for at the end of the contest. A Final Project Rubric is also included for teacher feedback.
