St. Patrick's Day Games

Your students will have fun this St. Patrick's Day with these sight word games! Included in this download are six games (4 card games and 2 board games) that each have a St. Patrick's day theme. The four card games are: Old Maid, Go Fish, Memory, and Whammy. The two board games are: Race to the Finish and Connect Four. Each game comes with an instructions page so that you can teach the game to your students. Each game has a St. Patrick's day theme and popular sight words that are from the FRY 100 sight word list. I have made each of these games blank (with no sight words and only St. Patrick's day designs) if you just want your students to enjoy a fun St. Patrick' day game. :)

The sight words used throughout these games are:

The details of each game are below:

1. Go Fish

Your students will practice their sight words with this classic game of Go Fish. This game includes 2 complete card game sets of Go Fish. Each of the Go Fish Games has a different design (solids or stripes) in the corner to help you keep the cards organized. Each Go Fish Game has 48 cards with sight words. Within each game, there are 24 patching pairs with St. Patrick's Day designs.

The rules of the game are simple: The dealer shuffles the cards and deals out 6 cards to each of the players. The rest of the cards are placed faced down in a pile. To start the game, the player to the left of the dealer asks any player for a card to match a current card in his or her hand. If they are given a card to make a match, the matching pair is laid down. If the opposing player does not have the card needed, they say ‘Go Fish!’ and the requester draws a card from the center pile. If the card drawn from the center pile can make a match, the matching pair is placed down. Continue playing until all the possible pairs are found. The player with the most pairs at the end of the game wins.

2. Old Maid

This game includes 2 complete card game sets of Old Maid. Each of the Old Maid Games has a different design (solids or stripes) in the corner to help you keep the cards organized. Each Old Maid Game has 48 cards with sight words, plus 1 Old Maid. Within each game, there are 24 patching pairs with St. Patrick's day designs.

The rules of the game are simple: The dealer shuffles the cards and deals out 6 cards to all the players. The players set down all card pairs that are in their hands. The player to the left of the dealer draws one card from the hand of the player to his or her right. If a pair is made, it is placed down. The next player to the left then draws a card from the player to his or her right. Play continues from player to player until all the pairs are matched and placed down. One player will be left with the Old Maid card and loses the game. Your students will love this easy sight word game!

3. Memory

Your students will practice their sight words with this classic game of Memory. This download includes 2 complete card game sets of Memory. Each of the Memory Games has a different design (solids or stripes) in the corner to help you keep the cards organized. Each Memory Game has 48 cards with sight words. Within each game, there are 24 patching pairs with St. Patrick's day designs. Each Memory Game has 48 cards. Within each game, there are 24 patching pairs.

The rules of the game are simple: Shuffle 1 set of 48 cards and place them face down in equal rows. Each player turns over 2 cards a time trying to find a matching pair. If they turn over a matching pair of cards, they get to keep the pair of cards and have another turn. If they turn over 2 cards that are not a match, they turn them back over and the next player takes their turn. The player with the most sets after all the matching pairs are found, wins. Your students will love this easy sight word game!

4.Whammy

Your students will practice their sight words with this Card game called Whammy! This download includes 2 complete card game sets of Whammy. Each of the Whammy Games has a different design (solids or stripes) in the corner to help you keep the cards organized. Each Whammy has 48 cards with sight words, plus 3 whammy cards. Within each game, there are 24 patching pairs with St. Patrick's day designs. Each Whammy has 48 cards, plus 3 whammy cards. Within each game, there are 24 patching pairs.

The rules of the game are simple: The deck of 48 cards (either stripes or solids) is shuffled and placed face down in the center. Students take turns pulling a card from the top of the deck. If the student can read the word, they can keep the card. If they cannot read the word, the card goes to the bottom of the deck. If a student pulls a Whammy! Card, they lose all their cards and must place them under the deck. Students can play this game indefinitely. Or, students can play until someone has a set number of cards (i.e., 10 or 20 cards). Your students will love this fun and easy sight word game!

5. Connect Four

There are two board games with different sight words on each. Students will take turns using a token to mark their place on any sight word that they can read on the board. The object of the game is to read and cover 4 sight words in a row, horizontal or vertical. Students will have fun trying to make a line of 4, or trying to block their opponent from getting a line of four. I have also included a blank game board (with no sight words) if you want your students to play a board game just for fun, or if you want students to write in words from your own word wall.

6.Race to the Finish

Your students will practice their sight words with this fun board game Race to the Finish! You will receive two game boards with different words. The rules of the game are simple: Each player takes turn spinning a number (with a paperclip under a pencil tip) and moving their token ahead that many spaces. Students need to read aloud the sight word on the space that they land on. The winner is the student who can reach the end of the board and the pot of gold first.
