There are many components involved in teaching a child to be a strong reader. Teaching children how to divide words into syllables provides them with much needed word attack tools to use when faced with decoding new words. This packet provides anchor charts that give rules for dividing words into syllables and anchor charts that review how the vowels in those syllables are marked and read. I have included multiple pages of words for your students to use as well as answer keys for each page. There are also pages with pictures clue cards for each word. These picture cards can be used for students to match up words with pictures. This provides an additional way for teachers to gauge reading word comprehension. Sorting mats are also included with the specific rule for dividing words listed on it. There is one mat per rule so you can see if children are applying the correct method to divide each word. This packet can be used in a multitude of ways. You can use this as a whole class activity, at learning centers, in small groups, in guided reading groups, and as a game among students or teams. You could also make copies of the cards to send home with students for additional practice.
