This St. Patrick's Day assignment is perfect for ELA classes or reading workshop! In it, students imagine that the protagonist of the novel they are currently reading has caught a leprechaun. (As leprechaun folklore goes, leprechauns grant their captors three wishes in exchange for their freedom.) Then, students write out the three wishes their protagonists would ask the leprechaun for in exchange for the leprechaun's freedom.
The product contains two versions of the same assignment: one will take a short amount of time--something quick you can use to recognize the holiday but that won't overwhelm the class time you have. This version is perfect for reading workshop because you can present the assignment before students read and then give students approximately ten minutes after reading time is up to fill out the form. If there is still time left in class, students can share their characters' wishes with the class.
The other version is an extended response essay. It comes with a sample essay that students can use as a model for their own writing.
The first assignment serves more as a reading assessment, while the essay version serves as a writing assignment.
Either way, the purpose of the assignment is for students to think carefully about what their characters want in their books. The leprechaun element is minor, but it makes a fun transition into the work students will be doing when they are thinking about their characters' motivations and conflicts.
The product comes in a .pdf and .doc file for editing.
Check out the preview! It shows the two handouts. And I added a lined sheet of paper for the extended response essay so that you can copy the assignment and sample essay on the front of a piece of paper and the lined paper on the back when you run it through the copy machine.
