My kiddos love anything that lets them compete with each other (in a good, lighthearted manner) and so I’ve created a St. Patrick’s Day themed activity to reinforce initial blends and reading for fluency. There are 21 initial blend leprechauns and 16 word hats for each initial blend… 336 words!
You can adjust the resources for any activity you’d like, but my kiddos will be working in teams to see who can stack their initial blend hats the highest as they identify each word that matches the leprechaun and use the word in a sentence. Bonus if they can use multiple hat words in a sentence! If a team cannot correctly read a word, their hat stack will be wiped off and they must return back to their original leprechaun and build again. Once a certain initial blend set is mastered, they can move on to another! This could also be used for independent work and students could record the words they sorted onto their hat stack. I’ve included a recording sheet if you’d like to use it.
