Introduce your 2nd/3rd grade kiddos with learning how to move up and down the musical staff with this fun and adorable game. Squirrels start at the bottom of the trees and try to be the first one to the top to get the acorns. Each round, 2nd grade students draw one card and either step up/down or repeat. Skip cards are included for 3rd graders. Best printed on card stock and then laminated!
Begin by placing a painters tape staff on your classroom floor. Get students acquainted with lines and spaces, what the numbering system is, etc.
Have students start at the bottom line and play a game called "Staff Racers".
1.) Have students come up in groups of 3-4 and practice stepping to various numbered spaces and lines (ex. Line 4)
2.) After practice, students will advance to the final round if they are the first to correctly move the correct line/space.
Still on the floor staff, have students play "Staff Map"
1.) Students begin at starting line, and tell them to move up so many lines or spaces. Once they correctly move there, give them a new direction (up one line, or down two spaces).
2.) Once students are capable of moving without being corrected, transfer play to "Staff Climbers" and do the same thing but with their squirrel pieces on the game board.
