Students review Joseph Stalin's rise, time in power, and end by organizing 22 events on a timeline and answering 4 questions. They must classify each timeline item according to a system detailed in the instructions, there is one task to complete for 6 items and another task to complete for 4 other items. There are arrows in the first two lines of the timeline showing students the direction to fill out the pieces in. This could work for a sub and answers are provided where appropriate!
As this covers Stalin's whole life, it is best completed at the end of your WW2 unit or as an activity at the start of your unit on the Cold War.
Sample timeline items and questions include:
-- joined Bolshevik party
-- attended Potsdam Conference
--went to seminary school
--brought Soviets into nuclear age
--economic blockade on Berlin
--What do you consider Stalin’s greatest success and why? How can the word “success” be used with someone we equate with a negative regime? Would historians agree with you, why or why not?
--If you could give one piece of advice to Stalin at any point during his life, what would it be and why? Do you think he would have heeded your advice, why or why not?
***a teacher's note is included in the file describing an alternate way students can complete this activity***
