Need a super quick way to check for understanding of long-form electron configuration? This set of 30 cards are for you!
Each card in this set has a question that provides a unique, standard long-form electron configuration. Students are asked to identify the symbol of the element represented by that electron configuration. Simply have students solve the problem and bring you the card. Check their answer against the key, using their card number, and quickly assess the entire class on an individual basis.
This activity truly takes 5 minutes and provides the formative assessment data that you need to keep moving forward! Print the set on colored paper, laminate, and cut them apart to make a lasting set you can quickly distribute every year.
Bonus Idea: Turn this into a scavenger hunt by having students search for a specific element. (Consider attaching these cards to the wall for an easy scavenger hunt...or hide them around the room and give a prize to the student(s) that can find and solve multiple problems!) You can extend the activity by having students identify the number of energy levels and/or the number of valence electrons in their element. Its a versatile activity!
