Here's a great product to support the constant shuffling of standards. Run off these over sized slides with one side showing the standard and the back side displaying a user friendly version.
Keep these on your desk or better yet post it on your whiteboard for the occasional walk through. At a glance one would see what standard you are currently working on. Place the words: "Standard for the day or the week" and beneath it adhere the laminated slide. Use which ever side is most fitting for the day.
This way should the focus digress, it will help students and you return to the task at hand, or use as you see fit.
Another way to utilize this resource is to turn it over to the students. Have students read a select portion of a text and apply the essential questions to it from any standard you choose or a group chooses. Students should then answer the questions in their journals or on large post its for a gallery walk.
This will reveal a variety of ways students "think" when they read, and that is something teachers most definitely want to know.
18 slides are included; the user friendly is crafted in question format for students to think about or for the teacher to consider.
