Are you tired of hearing the same old “book report” for your kids’ outside reading book? Or do you want a new, fresh way to liven up the Book Talks? Well this book review [speed dating style] is a great way to make reading fun and to make sure that they’re still learning/utilizing the essential standards. It works with non-fiction books as well!
This Speed Dating Book Review covers 4-5 main Common Core Standards, plus several other minor standards not listed on the Book Profile. These Common Core Standards are easily adapted to meet your individual state’s standards if your school has not transitioned [theme, vocab acquisition, figurative language, etc.].
Students choose an outside reading book and complete the Book Profile on their own. On the culminating day [or two days], students will be in alternating circles, getting 3 minutes to share their book with a partner; then the other student shares as well. After each 6 minute session, students on the outside circle scoot down a seat, and the process starts again. While students are listening to their partner, they have a scorecard to fill out about their partner's book.
This activity is also great for students who have trouble sitting and paying attention for long periods of time.
So break the routine of boring book reports, and liven up your classroom with a little book speed-dating! Let your students find the next book match for them!
