I have scoured the common core standards and organized all the skills into concise categories and objectives (see my standards-based grading rubrics which are already posted and have a great rating!)
This is just the writing portion of the Rubrics, but I have also created a comprehensive checklist for students to use when editing and revising their work to ensure that they can demonstrate each skill at mastery level. This makes communicating your expectations of their writing clear and concise, and it's completely in line with the common core standards. Every student should be able to have a clear understanding of how to achieve mastery, as well as a guide to make sure they are hitting the mark. This will work wonderfully for just that!
Also... this can be used for ANY type of writing. By organizing the standards the way I did, I was able to pull out the key concepts and skills that students should be able to master and create rubrics which are skill-specific, rather than assignment-specific. This checklist is detailed enough that is clearly articulates how to differentiate your writing for different purposes and audiences (persuasive, expository, narrative). This makes grading simple and FAST for you! MY grading time on long essays has been cut in half, and I have not sacrificed detailed feedback in the process.
