I designed these "Standards for Mathematical Practice" posters to match 1st grade Common Core State Standards. They will save you time as they make student learning easier and more fun.
You’ll get four types of materials in this set, differentiated to meet your students' needs:
1. Simplified full-color versions, appropriate to hang on the wall. These teach students about their basic goals when solving math problems.
2. Detailed, full-color versions. These contain explanations of what to do before, during, and after attempting a problem. Use these when discussing standards in detail. They also make great references for anyone working or volunteering in the classroom.
3. Simplified black-and-white versions. Many students will benefit from placing these in their math notebooks.
4. Detailed black-and-white versions. Some students will benefit from referring to these versions. They are great for parent references as well.
I rephrased the standards as "I can" statements to make them comprehensible to 1st graders. I also reordered them based on developmental research and how students generally solve problems. I included "persevering" first (MP1). Next, students usually consider using tools (MP5), followed by drawing diagrams (MP4), followed by using numbers and symbols to solve problems (MP2). Students follow the rest in order as they learn to explain their thinking, attend to precision, and look for patterns as well as easy ways to solve problems.
